It’s kind of surprising to hear that 2013 NBA MVP LeBron James had never appeared on a videogame cover before. I mean, even Vince Young has appeared on the cover of a videogame.
That doesn’t matter anymore, though, as 2K Sports announced today that James would grace the cover of NBA 2K14 later this year.
“My friends, family, and fans all know how much I love NBA 2K,” said James, “I remember, as a kid, getting so excited for the game to come out and see who was on the cover and it’s amazing to be a part of this great tradition.”
2K Sports SVP of Sports Operations Jason Argent added, “Widely regarded as the best player today, LeBron James is the perfect choice for NBA 2K14, the biggest and best game in our NBA 2K franchise history.”
Players who pre-order NBA 2K14 on PS3 or Xbox 360 will gain access to the King James Bonus Pack, which includes the following:
- 10,000 Virtual Currency to get a jump start on the competition
- Extra content for the new Path to Greatness mode;
- LeBron James unlocked in Blacktop Mode;
- The all-new LeBron James Signature Skill available for your MyPlayer.
It was an interesting choice for 2K Sports to unveil this cover at the start of the NBA Finals, because James’ aura will be slightly diminished if his Miami Heat fail to defeat the underdog San Antonio Spurs. San Antonio defeated the Heat in Game 1 of the best-of-seven series last night.
NBA 2K14 will launch on October 1 in North America and on October 4 everywhere else for PS3 and Xbox 360. The game will be available at a later date for PS4 and Xbox One.
