In celebration of the 30th anniversary of the WWE’s flagship wrestling event, WrestleMania, 2K games announced a new mode coming to WWE 2K14 entitled ’30 Years of WrestleMania.’ It is a single-player campaign that allows players to reenact some of the best moments of WrestleMania starting with the original WrestleMania at the famed Madison Square Garden through matches like Hulk Hogan versus Andre the Giant at WrestleMania 3 or The Rock versus John Cena at WrestleMania 28.
The full roster for the new mode will be revealed on 2k’s Twitch stream during SummerSlam Axxess, but the basic format of the new mode is known, if not all of the specific announcements. It is a single player campaign that will take the player through forty-five matches over five distinct eras that will be presented with unique elements such as authentically recreated arenas, Superstar ring entrances, ring attire, era-specific graphics and screen filters to provide a sense of immersion.
On top of that, there will be a number of WWE produced video packages and in-game cut scenes that will provide historical information on the matches. Players will be encouraged to replicate the matches and complete objectives, as doing so will unlock additional playable Superstars, alternate costumes, new arenas and archive photography.
While it is a safe bet that matches such as The Ultimate Warrior versus Hulk Hogan will more than likely make the cut, you kind of want to hope that the list of matches will not be something that could be one hundred percent predicted. Yes, HBK will make the list along with the Undertaker, Triple H, Stone Cold and the Rock, but it would be fantastic to see a couple of obscure or ridiculous matches make the cut. Imagine a Rowdy Roddy Piper versus Mr. T match or a similar match with Bart Gunn versus Butterbean, seeing as both matches were actually boxing matches. If the WWE really wanted to go for broke, a Big Show versus Akebono sumo match (aka two big men wearing giant things) would tie the whole package together quite nicely.
WWE 2K14 is available for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 on October 29th.
