Ubisoft, Sony Pictures Entertainment and New Regency team up for possible Watch Dogs film.
Ubisoft announced the Watch Dogs film during Sony’s press conference at Gamescom. The winner of many E3 awards this year, Watch Dogs was quoted as “Perfect for the big screen.” Hannah Minghella, president of production for Columbia Pictures, had this to say, “The themes and open gameplay of ‘Watch Dogs‘ lends itself perfectly to the big screen.”
Chief executive officer of Ubisoft Motion Pictures Jean-Julien Baronnet said, “Since both Sony and Ubisoft have movie and videogame branches, this deal creates exceptional opportunities for us to merge the realms of the story-based cinematic experience with the interaction of the videogame. Sony Pictures and New Regency have deep production expertise and are letting us maintain a strong creative voice in the film’s development. Together, we’re confident we can deliver a movie that builds upon the excitement that the game is already generating.”
As you may remember, Ubisoft originally partnered with several studios for the Assassin’s Creed movie before a rumored issue with the creative control of the characters and story. Though Ubisoft has partners like Sony and New Regency, we can only assume it could be years before this particular project begins production.
Ubisoft Motions Pictures currently has Assassin’s Creed and Splinter Cell in production. Watch Dogs the videogame does not currently have a release date.
