SteamWorld Dig gives us a sandbox game with a story

Swedish game development studio Image & Form is releasing their previously 3DS exclusive, SteamWorld Dig: A Fistful of Dirt, to Steam users come December 5th.  The 3-month old western/steampunk mashup combines the exploration and synthesis aspects of sandbox games like Terraria with platforming, weapon upgrades, and power-ups similar to classic adventure games like Castlevania or Metroid.  The game puts you into the boots of the steambot miner Rusty, who finds his way to an old mining town to dig up treasures and help the town out.  During his excursions he must take care of the enemies within the mine, and eventually uncovers an even bigger threat deep down.

The game has received generally positive reviews and scores, and has received the platinum award from Pocket Gamer.  The biggest complaint seems to be that it leaves you wanting more, as Dig is only a 5-7 hour game.  However, the studio has already confirmed that a sequel is in development, so hopefully that will give people more to look forward to.

SteamWorld Dig is currently available for download on the Nintendo 3DS for $8.99.  According to their Facebook page, the game will be released to Steam in full HD for a suggested price of $9.99.
