Although it was rumored a month ago that this would be the case, developer Telltale Games officially announced today that they will be partnering with HBO Global Licensing to bring us a series of games based on the critically acclaimed Game of Thrones television show. For those of you who have been living under a rock for the past few years, Game of Thrones is a show on HBO based on the bestselling series of books by George R. R. Martin, A Song of Fire and Ice. The books follow the political intrigue and goings-on of the noble families of Westeros as they vie for claim to the Iron Throne, as well as the looming, otherworldly evil that threatens the realm.
Telltale Games, known for many impressive titles such as the Sam and Max series, Monkey Island, and more recently The Walking Dead episodes and The Wolf Among Us, has stated that the game will be episodic, likely similar to The Walking Dead style of gameplay. Dan Connors, CEO and co-founder of Telltale commented that “Working with HBO to develop a new game series based on Game of Thrones is a natural fit for our studio…It will put them in control of the epic stories of warfare, intrigue, violence and revenge that we know and love.”
This is very exciting for Game of Thrones fans, and it will be interesting to see where and when these episodes will take place. If they are prequels, it could very well expand the mythos of the Game of Thrones universe and put some fan theories to rest. The games could also very easily parallel the current events of the series, introducing us to new characters and locales, letting us further see the destruction the war for the Iron Throne has caused. Whatever it is, I have faith that Telltale Games will bring us a quality game, and I look forward to it!
Game of Thrones is set for a 2014 release, and will be available on home consoles, PC/Mac, as well as mobile devices. For more information on the game check back with us, or follow Telltale Games on Twitter.
