Cranky Kong gets off his rocker to join DK in upcoming Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

Exciting news for fans of simians! During a live demonstration at VGX 2013, Nintendo revealed that Donkey Kong’s papa, Cranky Kong, will be a playable character in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. This marks the first time Cranky has ever been usable, and he joins Diddy and Dixie as one of Donkey Kong’s partners in his upcoming adventure that is sure to be bananas. Nintendo also announced that Tropical Freeze will be hitting North America February 21st, 2014, both at retail and on the Nintendo eShop.

Even though Cranky looks like he is 80 years old, don’t let that fool you; Cranky is very athletic for his age, and he can bounce on spikes using his cane just like Unca Scrooge, allowing him to reach places the other Kongs can’t. As was the case in Donkey Kong Country Returns, Cranky will ride on DK’s back like Diddy did in single-player mode, but will be fully controllable by another player in co-op. Cranky’s extra muscle will be needed, as the Kongs must face a new threat in the form of The Snowmads, who have frozen DK Island for nefarious purposes, I’m sure. New features like the ability to swim (which wasn’t new back in the SNES Donkey Kong Country games) and being able to use the Wii U GamePad for off-TV play are sure to make gamers want to monkey around.
