October is getting closer and that means we’re closer to Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor! I must admit that I gave up on a decent LotR or The Hobbit game a long time ago, but this one does have my full attention. While Shadow of Mordor seems to step away from the more “realistic” gameplay seen in the films and stories, it still looks like it’s going to be an amazing chapter that brings together the events after The Hobbit and before the first portions of Lord of the Rings.
I can only imagine that this will end well for all parties involved…
Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Monolith Productions decided to open a panel at the SD Comic-Con entitled, “Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor — How the Nemesis System evolves new-generation storytelling in games, and explores the history of the Rings of Power”. Nerd radar is working full force today. Despite the yawn-inducing title, the panel does actually hold promise!
- Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor‘s innovative approach to storytelling through the Nemesis System, and how storytelling in games is all about the player stories.
- The secret history of the Rings of Power and their relationship to the Wraith, one of the key characters in SoM.
- Revealing new story elements, including one of Middle-earth’s most beloved characters, Gollum, and his role in the upcoming action game.
- A brand new feature trailer revealed!
Ehmm…I might have spoken too soon.
Choosing this kind of panel is rather promising however, because the main drive of the gameplay is that you are able to bend the lands of Mordor to your own will as you orchestrate your own unique plan of vengeance after Sauron’s Black Captains brutally execute the Rangers of the Black Gate. Taking on the role of the protagonist, Talion, you will wreak your own style of death and justice. The Nemesis System actually promises to document player actions, cataloging each distinct enemy encountered, and then evolving each enemy (the ones who survive at least) to potentially become a personal archenemy through the course of the game.
Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor is slated to be released this October 7th on the PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
