Spend a few minutes, or even seconds, with indie developer Frozenbyte’s newest offering for the iOS, Splot, and addiction may form. Frozenbyte has figured out the right formula for a casual game in a mobile device: simple controls, easy-to-understand mechanics, and numerous avatar customization all packaged in a simple to digest story. Splot is a one-eyed blue alien who has found itself in strange land of the Birdlings, a race of baby chicks that is in danger of extinction from predatory hungry blobs. The blobs have an appetite for the aviary race, and Splot has decided to save the helpless birds.
Controlling Splot utilizes three different aspects of the mobile device: the left and right side of the screen for jumping and holding a button for sliding faster on walls and jumping farther. The controls are simple and intuitive which can be learned easily. In each level, the blue alien must race a hungry blob from ultimately eating a group of Birdlings while saving stray ones along the way. Experience points are awarded for each successful rescue, which levels up Splot and unlocks its latent abilities.
Experience points and sometimes puzzle pieces are awarded at the end of a successful level.
The abilities give Splot a decent mechanic that makes each level fresh and exciting. Before each level starts, Splot can pick one ability, from freezing enemies and magnetizing Birdlings so they are easier to save, to help it easily beat the level. The abilities do have a cooldown; typically, three successful rescues per ability.
An ability can be chosen at the start of every level.
Abilities are not the only aspect of the game that needs to be unlocked. The game offers plenty of ways to change the blue alien to a different color palette swap via collecting four random puzzle pieces in each level. With seven areas with eight levels each and each difficulty level giving different costumes, there is more than a hundred of customization options to choose from.
Just a few ways to customize Splot.
Casual gamers who are looking for an enjoyable experience on their mobile devices will easily enjoy Splot. The game is simple enough to understand and play, and can be enjoyed for a quick 30-second level or for hours trying to obtain those cool costumes. It is available currently on iOS devices and PCs.
