I have always been a fan of video game music growing up playing video games. Various artists ranging from Koji Kondo (The Legend of Zelda Series) and Shoji Meguro (Persona Series) to Jeremy Soule (The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim) and Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy Series) have always left me entertained while studying or working, but one man has composed more soundtracks to video games than any other artist. That gentleman is Tommy Tallarico, and he is looking forward to bringing his overwhelming knowledge of video game music to New York this January.
Tallarico has composed over 300 video game soundtracks including titles such as Advent Rising, Earthworm Jim, Maximo: Ghosts to Glory, and many more. In the last decade though, Tommy Tallarico decided to start a concert series called “Video Games Live” which debuted in July 2005. This series has been going on year after year recreating songs from titles such as Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Halo, Civilization, and so many more. I had the amazing opportunity to have an over-the-phone interview with Mr. Tallarico where he gave me more information on the upcoming concert in New York City at the Beacon Theatre on January 31.
Tallarico stated that there would be various world premieres from games such as Donkey Kong Country and Ico while a heavy metal version of various Pokémon themes will be performed by Viking Jesus. Alongside these great world premieres, he also stated that many of the new songs that will be on the Video Games Live: Level 4 album coming out soon will be played live at the concert. Various guest composers will be there including Christopher Tin (Civilization IV) and composers from both the Halo series and League of Legends.
This video was recorded from 2013 in San Franciso where gamers were able to play Super Smash Bros Melee while an entire choir and orchestra played the Brawl theme live.
If you are a fan of video game music and want to see some of the best soundtracks in the industry played live by a complete orchestra, this is the concert series to see. They will be having a costume contest and Guitar Hero contest before the actual concert where the winners will be able to get on stage. The winner of the Guitar Hero contest will even be able to play on stage while the orchestra and Tommy play alongside! Meet and Greets will be done at the end of the show with Tommy Tallarico and the guest composers that will be present at the event.
Tickets for the event are still available. For more information, please visit their official website. VIP tickets are also available for the event which include a backstage tour with Tommy Tallarico, backstage passes, signed posters and sheet music, and lots of awesome gifts. This is an event that I have been wanting to go to for quite some time, I have watched and listened to the previous releases they have made. The spirit that Tommy brings into the show is unmatched and it’s just a great event all around for those who love video games.
9 minutes of amazing music from Halo performed live in 2010.
Can’t make it to New York on January 31? Not in the USA? That’s fine. Tommy and his crew travel around the world each year with their concert series spreading the amazing quality that video game music has. So still check out their website to see if they are coming near you! The Video Games Live: LEVEL 4 album will release worldwide on February 18 and will contain various songs that have been performed recently including songs that will be performed at the Beacon Theatre in New York City.
