The first episode of the much anticipated Resident Evil Revelations sequel has hit digital stores in North America and Europe, with three more weekly episodes to follow.
Episode 1 will take us through the storming of a “Terra Save” office and the subsequent capture of old favourite Claire Redfield. In an interesting focus on the female characters of the series, the episode will have you tentatively exploring the eerie detention facility that Claire and Moira Burton find themselves in. In true Resident Evil fashion, however, expect to be whisked away from this action just as it gets good to help out Moira’s searching father, Barry Burton, as he heads towards the remote island the women are being held on. The fact he is joined by a new character, Natalia Korda, with intriguing, yet neatly handy, abilities to sense enemies and hidden objects, means that players will have to alternate between the two in order to survive the island and reunite father and daughter.
Capcom’s decision to follow Telltale’s hugely successful episodic format bred some surprise among the gaming community, which previously recognized the episodic medium as aimed towards much more narrative-driven games. Resident Evil, despite being an immensely exciting series as a whole, has seen some shortcomings in story-lines of certain titles. Previously relying on the large variety of settings for narrative diversity, the series has sometimes fallen short in terms of varied story-telling techniques. The episodic format, however, allows for a more digestible narrative progression, and greater emphasis on expanding players’ knowledge of certain back-stories and general understanding of the plot.
Each episode will come fully packed with Raid mode content, and purchasing the full season will entitle you to an extra two spin-off episodes exploring characters’ side stories as well as additional Raid mode character, Hunk. When all episodes are released, Capcom is also delivering a disk edition of the game which will see players enjoying everything from the full season pack plus Albert Wesker as a Raid mode character, an extra costume for each of your main characters, and a Raid mode “Throwback Map Pack” consisting of four maps from previous titles.
The first episode is available on PS4, PS3, XBox One, Xbox 360, and Steam and is priced at $5.99 / £4.99 with the full season costing $24.99 / £19.99.
