Nintendo has teased us with a Wii U version of Star Fox before, but at E3 they officially lifted the curtain on what will be one of the most sought-after titles of the holiday season.
Star Fox Zero is coming to the Wii U before 2015 is done.
Based on the plot line of Star Fox 64, Zero appears to be much more than a remake. There are new levels, bigger enemies, and a whole new control scheme. During their Digital Event, Nintendo showed how the player can use the Wii U gamepad’s gyro controls to aim at enemies from cockpit view, no matter which direction he or she is flying in. This is probably going to take some getting used to for Star Fox veterans, but the new scheme should allow for more versatility, especially when players enter the 360-degree all-range mode.
Another big change for the franchise is the ability of the Arwing to seamlessly transform into a walker that resembles an AT-ST from Star Wars. In previous Star Fox iterations, players weren’t able to choose if they take on missions from the ground or the air, but that appears to have changed. The new walker functionality adds some much-needed variety to a game that on the surface looks a lot like a shinier version of Star Fox 64.
The game is also outfitted with the return of the Landmaster tank as well as a new hovercraft to keep things fresh. It’s been a long, strange trip for the Star Fox franchise every since Star Fox 64 came out in 1997, but it appears that fans of the furry action title have a new adventure worth looking forward to.
