Your resident Skylanders expert is back, this time bringing news from Gamescom. In Cologne, Activision announced a number of new features coming to Skylanders Superchargers, some more surprising than others. First up is online multiplayer, a new addition to the series. In addition to the franchise’s typical local co-op, you will be able to play through the Adventure Mode online as well.
Online multiplayer also extends to the newly-announced racing mode for the vehicle-focused game. The base game will feature six tracks, two each for Land, Sea, and Sky vehicles. The races will have combat elements and the tracks will have branching paths. You can race with one other player locally, or with up to three others online (with access to voice chat as well). The racing mode will also be expanded to make up the entirety of the 3DS and Wii versions, which will lack the Adventure Mode but have extra modes and features for the racing mode.
You can also add more to the racing mode with the newly announced Racing Action Packs, one for each type of vehicle. These will include a SuperCharger character, the associated signature vehicle, and a new item called a villain trophy. Using these trophies will unlock new tracks and race modes, but they can also each be used to make one of four boss villains playable, totaling twelve bosses. They will thus work similarly to the traps in last year’s Skylanders Trap Team.
Skylanders SuperChargers is set to release on September 25th in Europe and on September 20th in North America. The main version of the game will be available for the Xbox One, Xbox 360, Playstation 4, Playstation 3, Wii U, and iPad. Skylanders SuperChargers Racing will be available on the same dates for Wii and Nintendo 3DS. As previously announced, the versions for Nintendo platforms will feature exclusive characters, and there will be a Dark Edition available for all platforms.
