Activision announced today that a new mobile entry in the Skylanders series will be released next year. Called Skylanders Battlecast, it will be a “mobile card battle game” similar to Hearthstone, for example. Little is known at the moment about what the mechanics will be, but the game will feature online multiplayer and a single player campaign. You can buy digital packs of cards within the program, as with most digital trading card games. But in true Skylanders fashion you can also buy packs of physical cards and scan them into the game, reminiscent of Eye of Judgement. At least some of these will be character cards, which players can interact with in augmented reality using the mobile device’s camera.
Skylanders Battlecast will be available in 2016 on the App Store, Google Play, and the Amazon Appstore. The game will be free-to-play, but the pricing structure for packs is currently unknown, as is device compatibility.
