Fighting game fans, are you ready for Street Fighter V? I certainly am, and the game is coming to PC and PS4 quite soon (February 16th, in fact). With the game so close to release, I didn’t expect too many surprises left, but then Capcom released this trailer today:
According to ComboFiend, that right there was a sneak peek at the cinematic story expansion for Street Fighter V. Releasing this June as a free update for all players, this add-on takes place between the events of Street Fighter IV and Street Fighter III (because why have the timeline flow smoothly?), and will explain everything that happens between the two games. Street Fighter IV was light on story, especially with regards to how it connected to the series’ main timeline, so this is actually very refreshing to see Capcom add in (almost as refreshing as seeing Charlie look longingly at a picture of Guile, his BFF, in the trailer above).
Zangief, noticing the wonderful design of R. Mika’s outfit
This doesn’t mean that Street Fighter V will be launching with NO story, however. Each character will have their own individual storylines that explain what drives them to street fight in the first place, and their relationships to one another. Each story has been drawn by famous Japanese illustrator Bengus, who has worked with Capcom before (most notably on the Street Fighter Alpha series, whose influence can be seen in the screenshots on this very page!). These storylines will all lead up to the main expansion launching this summer, which is a great way to get people to explore each character in the SFV lineup.
Loving Chun-Li’s alternate costume, btw
Lastly, as thanks to all of their fans and supporters, Capcom will be holding one final beta for SFV before its launch. This beta will start January 30th at 12:01 AM PT and last until January 31st at 7:00 PM PT. This is your last chance to try the game out before its release, so head here to pre-order and get access to exclusive costumes (or wait until they are inevitably released as DLC, like me!).
