New characters, skit features and battle systems revealed for Tales of Berseria

Fans of the beloved “Tales Of” franchise are no doubt eagerly anticipating the release of the next installment in the series – Tales of Berseria. The game is slated to be released in early 2017 and until recently, not much has been revealed about its content or gameplay.

Today, BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment Europe announced the 2017 approximate release date and also confirmed new details about the game.

New Playable Characters Confirmed
Two new playable characters have been announced. One is Eizen, nicknamed “The Reaper”, who is the skipper of Aifread’s pirates who always makes his own decisions. Eizen is a malak (a spiritual being that can harness the power of nature), but despite this he sails the Van Eltia pirate ship on the open seas to follow his own creed. On his quest to find the missing Captain Van Aifread, he meets Velvet and joins her party to fight their common enemy: the Abbey.

If this isn't the same one from Zestiria...

(Author Note: As someone who played Tales of Zestiria, which is set in the same universe as Berseria, I was immediately alerted to the name Eizen. I’m very interested to see whether it’s the same one from the former game.)

On the other side of the coin, the other new character, Eleanor, defends the Abbey against Velvet’s repeated attacks. Eleanor is a praetor who always scrabbles to release the world from the threats of daemons, though fate will eventually force her to join in with Velvet and Eizen. She is an honest person with great compassion for others, though sometimes she can be overcome with emotion.

A New Way To Enjoy Skits!
Fans of the “Tales Of” series always look forward to hilarious new skits in each game, usually because the teasing between party members is magnificent. Tales of Berseria will employ a new skit system which employs a “cut-in” effect where character illustrations are inserted in various ways depending on the conversation. Sometimes a skit describes a single character’s facial expression, while other times it shows a conversation among multiple characters – expressions really change depending on the cut.

New Battle System!
The “Tales Of” battle systems are always colourful and fun to employ on the battlefield, and Berseria should be no exception with the introduction of the new “Switch Blast” battle system. Players will be able to switch characters during battles and choose a backup character to replace one character in battle. The backup character received certain in-battle benefits when they are swapped into battle, mostly to do with the “soul” mechanic. Each character also has a unique attack when joining battle via Switch Blast.

It sounds as though Tales of Berseria will be trying to change up the formula a little bit while still keeping all the things long-time players have come to expect from a “Tales Of” game. As they say, “Once a ‘Tales Of’ fan, always a big spender”, so bring on the big, fancy special edition for me.

Tales of Berseria will be available for PlayStation 4 and Steam for PC in early 2017.
