It’s that time again, folks. As the site’s resident Portal Master it’s my duty to tell you that Activision has just announced Skylanders Imaginators, the latest game in the original toys-to-life series.
Each Skylanders game has something to set it apart. Last time it was vehicles, and this time it’s all about customization. Imaginators will feature a deep system to let you create your own Skylanders. You can choose their fighting styles, weapons, heads, limbs, catchphrases, attacks, and more. Custom characters are saved onto physical “creation crystals,” similar to the traps from Skylanders Trap Team. This means you can use them alongside another player’s custom characters, just like with normal Skylanders.
Speaking of which, fans of more traditional Skylanders toys needn’t worry, as there will be 20 new character toys as well. These will be a mix of brand new characters and former villains (presumably some of those that were playable in Trap Team.) Already announced are the Golden Queen, and new characters King Pen and Tri-Tips. These new and returning characters will be called “Senseis” and have special moves, in addition to unlocking new weapons for custom characters. The vehicles from the last game will be used as well, but only in a standalone racing mode.
This is the most excited I’ve been for a video game in quite a while, but unfortunately, I have a while to wait. Skylanders Imaginators will be released on October 16th in the US, the 14th in the UK, and the 13th in Australia and New Zealand. This time around the game will be available for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Wii U. Support for the Wii, 3DS, and iOS has been dropped since the last game.
