Lots of gamers have jumped into the wonderful world of JRPGs. Some of them have pretty strong themes and language and get slapped with a good old M rating from the ESRB. I’ve played some, but a game that usually doesn’t come to mind is Valkryia Revolution. This game is a spin-off from the popular Valkryia Chronicles series. While I am not a strict person when it comes to what is presentable at what age level, some people may find the content of this game a little strong for teenagers. Here is what the ESRB said about this game:
This is an action/role-playing game in which players control soldiers involved in a conflict between two fictional kingdoms. Characters engage in combat missions and use swords, guns, grenades, and magic attacks to defeat soldiers and boss characters. Some attacks result in small splashes of blood; cutscenes occasionally depict larger splashes of blood, as when a character is impaled on a sword or slashed. Battles are highlighted by realistic gunfire, cries of pain, and explosions.
The game includes some sexual material in the dialogue: “She was a real nympho, that one. She was one hell of a sl*t”; “Be it the bouncing of buxom bosoms or the subtle splendor of smaller sets”; “…a woman’s beauty presents itself fully in her rear!” Several scenes depict characters drunk/hung over and/or talking about alcohol (e.g.,“I haven’t had enough to drink yet! Alcohol! Bring on the alcohol!”). The words “sh*t” and “a*shole” appear in dialogue.
If I were a parent shopping for a teenager, I would be pretty peeved if I bought a game that had a T rating only for a child to put it in and hear things like this being said about the female characters. As I said, I don’t worry too much about things like this, but I feel that people who buy games for younger gamers should really look into the ratings more often. They may find content they might not find appropriate, regardless if the game is able to be purchased by a minor. I already know that when I was growing up content like that in a game might make my mother raise her eyebrows! As I said, I feel that people should always check the ratings on games they allow younger players to get their hands on, and this game is a big example of why.
Valkryia Revolution is set to release on June 27th this year. This game will be available on Playstation 4 and Xbox One. To avoid a bit of confusion, the game is known as Valkryria: Azure Revolution in Japan.
