PREVIEW / Splatoon 2 Testfire (Beta)

Over the weekend of March 24-26 Nintendo held a beta for Splatoon 2 that they called the Splatoon 2 Testfire. Unlike most other betas they held the beta in one hour increments over the weekend from March 24-26. This is odd to me as it would’ve been far more convenient to be able to pick up and play whenever I had a free moment. The schedule they had made it hard to block out a time to play during my busy weekend, but I was able to play a few matches during one of the hours.

The game itself was great. This is coming from someone who has never played the first Splatoon. It never really appealed to me when it first came out, but after playing the beta for Splatoon 2 I was impressed and left wanting more. With my hour I was able to play the Testfire, I had zero connectivity problems. This is impressive for Nintendo, especially seeingas this is the first Nintendo Switch game to have online multiplayer.

Graphically the game is amazing. The very vibrant and colorful graphics made the experience really great. The Switch itself ran the game phenomenally with no frame rate drops or screen tearing at all. This beta truly showed some of the potential the Switch has when it comes to the graphic fidelity of the console.

The gameplay is great, if you managed to go into the settings and turn off the terrible motion controls. While I did not play the game docked on my TV, trying to play the game in the Switch’s portable configuration with the motion controls made it very difficult for me to win a game. Once I “switched” the motion controls off the game became incredibly fun. The controls themselves are very simple to get used to and without the motion controls on I found myself getting incredibly competitive in the game.

While the Splatoon 2 Testfire has come to an end, I can’t wait to play the game again. The combination of amazing graphics, great gameplay and competitive yet laid back online multiplayer makes me very exciting for the full game to be released.  If you own a Nintendo Switch and did not get a chance to take part in the Testfire, stay tuned to the Splatoon 2 twitter and developer of the game because I’m sure there will be another Testfire in the coming months leading to its release. I know I will.
