PREVIEW / P.A.M.E.L.A. (PC)

Imagine waking up some time in the distant future in a place that was supposed to offer you and your loved ones a new life.  A place where crime is nonexistent and everyone is provided for.  Now imagine that once you get your bearings, you quickly realize that something isn’t right and are, in fact, quite wrong, and you must immediately fight for your life as you try to determine what the hell went wrong.  Welcome to Eden, a fallen utopia wrought with death and danger.

PAMELA-01

P.A.M.E.L.A. is an intense open-world survival horror game being developed and published by NVYVE Studios.  You take control of the game as a Sleeper who has been awoken from cryosleep in Eden by PAMELA, an omnipresent AI overseer who is left alone watching over the once-vibrant city, now reduced to a silent monolith gliding across the ocean.  Utilizing a wide range of hi-tech weaponry, equipment, and customize-able items that can be upgraded to suit your needs, you must learn about the city and your place within it.  Along the way, you will encounter and battle the Afflicted, the maligned inhabitants of Eden driven mad by a horrific biological outbreak.

PAMELA-02

If you think this story sounds like another hit game that we have been blessed with in recent years, I have to admit that I thought the exact same thing.  It sounds really close to the story-line in the Bioshock series only in PAMELA, the game takes place on the water as opposed to under it.  While the game presents the typical FPS systems that we have come to expect, this game also throws in features that makes it feel more akin to the Deus Ex series than, say, a Halo or a Wolfenstein.  This is done by allowing the player to wield and customize an array of modular equipment to defend yourself from the Afflicted and to explore the dangerous locations in Eden.

PAMELA-03

Eden is in total disarray with rolling power outages, garbage and miscellaneous detritus clogs the pathways and common areas, not to mention the hordes of the Afflicted, the maligned inhabitants of Eden driven mad by a horrific biological outbreak that roam these areas.  Eden’s sentient AI, PAMELA, can do nothing but watch so she awakens you in order to figure out how to save the floating city.  Exploring in the daytime allows you to be a little reckless as you don’t have to worry too much about being ambushed.  However, in order to be safe at night, you must figure out how to keep the power flowing to the city.  Managing Eden’s power to keep the lights on will be the difference between life and death.

PAMELA-04

PAMELA is currently available on Steam Early Access for $24.99 and while most of the player reviews are positive, there are quite a few reviews from players that think the game is still too early in the development cycle to warrant the purchase right now.  Freezing, save errors and the lack of any type of tutorial are the main reasons that these early adopters have found that they should have waited awhile before taking a trip to Eden.  As I played the game for this preview, I experienced many of these same issues and can concur that these are valid complaints.  However, that is the nature of Early Access games so if you have purchased a game in this Steam program in the past then you know what to expect.
