Call of Duty franchise tops $3 billion in sales

Activision announced this morning that the Call of Duty franchise has now surpassed $3 billion in sales, according to data from the NPD Group, Charttrack, GfK and internal Activision estimates.

The Call of Duty franchise has sold over 55 million units worldwide since its first release in 2003, with much of the damage coming from the recent release of Modern Warfare 2, which moved $550 million in its first five days on sale, breaking both box office and videogame records as it became the biggest entertainment launch in history.

Activision CEO Bobby Kotick puts it all in perspective, “Call Of Duty has become one of the greatest entertainment franchises of all time. If you consider the number of hours our audiences are engaged in playing Call of Duty games, it is likely to be one of the most viewed of all entertainment experiences in modern history.”
