Fire & Ice: The Mortal Kombat co-op game that never was.

With a new Mortal Kombat game getting real, tangible hype around it, creator Ed Boon has been doing rounds with the press and talking up the upcoming back-to-the-roots entry in this long running fighting series. Spending some time with Game Informer, he actually let slip the existence of a now-cancelled co-op action game subtitled Fire & Ice.

The game’s setup involved having the series’ ninja rivals Scorpion and Sub-Zero teaming up for some sort of cooperative action. Boon spoke of Paradox, the game’s developer: “They actually started the early stages of that game, but they couldn’t do it in time and under budget, so the project was canceled and kind of went away.”

You may wonder, old Mortal Kombat fan, what kind of cooperative action the game would have, or just how these two ninjas who’ve repeatedly dismembered and maimed each other over the years would come to a truce. Unfortunately, it seems you will never know. But maybe this is better; now we can imagine, basically, that this would have been the best game ever.
