Cryptic may make Star Trek Online free if Champions Online does well

Calling all James T. Kirk/KHAN!! wannabes who long for a free Star Trek Online experience, it’s time to rally your starship crew and sign up to play… Champions Online? Yes.

According to Cryptic COO Jack Emmert, the reception a free-to-play Champions Online MMO receives next year will greatly determine the viability of the same business model going into effect for Star Trek Online. Saying that the company isn’t “sold one way or the other” on whether to take Star Trek Online to the free-to-play model yet, Emmert admits that it all depends on how Champions Online fares.

“If people want Star Trek to go free-to-play then get in and play Champions and help make it a great success, because that would send a strong message,” he explained.

Emmert does concede that the decision isn’t a one man show though, there are more people involved in the decision making process than just him and he just “can’t begin to say it would be an automatic ‘Yes, we’d do it.'” That being said, he does say that if Champions Online achieved the level of success that Turbine has with Dungeons and Dragons Online, a discussion about a free-to-play Star Trek Online would certainly be merited.
