We’ll never stop asking if Shenmue 3 is coming until… well it actually comes. For years now it seems like we’ve been running around in circles trying to uncover any news of the fabeled sequel. I think it’s about time we gave up.
Oh no wait, Yu Suzuki’s added more fuel to the fire! Yes, the series creator has once again teased fans by stating he’d like to make a third official game in the series. Right now though he’s of course working on the social game Shenmue City which is inspired by Facebook hit Mafia Wars.
He told IGN: “I want to make 3 with the same volume as in the past. There have actually been a lot of requests from fans for 3 as well. There were even petitions signed by by tens of thousands of people.”
So why doesn’t he just, y’know, do it? “Shenmue has the image of grand scale. But making something of grand scale requires appropriate preparation.” The franchise is known for having an incredibly deep world to go explore and play in, we can’t imagine bringing that to this generation of systems would be an easy task.
Suzuki did reveal that there’s more of a chance of it getting made if Shenmue City did well, but we don’t have any news on a Western release for that title either. It looks like if Shenmue 3 does happen though, it’s some ways off still.
