1996 Voted Golden Year of Gaming

In a vote taken by 2000 gamers in England, 1996 has been voted as the pinnacle of gaming history. The poll was carried out by the British company GAME. 14% of voters decided that the year that gave us Super Mario 64, Tomb Raider and the first Diablo, is the best we’ve ever had. Other notable games from that year are Crash Bandicoot, Donkey Kong Country 3, Super Mario RPG and Pokemon Red and Green.

The rest of the voting went like this:

  1. 2002 (13%): Halo, GTA: Vice City and Super Mario Sunshine.
  2. 1991 (12%): Street Fighter II, Super Mario World and Tecmo Super Bowl.
  3. 1985 (11%): Super Mario Bros, Duck Hunt and Donkey Kong Jr.
  4. 1980 (10%): Pac-Man and Centipede in the arcade, Space Invaders on the Atari 2600 and Zork on the PC.

They also voted on the Top Ten home consoles of all time:

  1. Wii (15%)
  2. Xbox 360 (10%)
  3. Playstation 3 (9%)
  4. Playstation 2 (8%)
  5. Sega Mega Drive (7%)
  6. Playstation 1 (6.5%)
  7. Super Nintendo (6%)
  8. Game Boy (5%)
  9. N64 (4.5%)
  10. Nintendo DS (4%)

However, maybe we should take these with a grain of salt. In their overview of gaming in 1996, they mentioned Tomb Raider and Crash Bandicoot, but not Super Mario 64. That’s just not right. Also, as much as I enjoyed my Wii, I don’t think it’s the best console of all time, I don’t think it’s even in the top 5.

What is your favorite gaming year or console?
