Poker is one of the most popular card games played online and in casinos. It is played with a predetermined set of rules where the player constructs his hand of five cards to the best of the cards that have been ruled to him and then according to the hands ranking order in Poker, it is determined whether he wins or loses.
Initially the game may seems difficult but once you know the ranking orders well enough it’s easy to play. Nonetheless, it is not just a game of luck but also skill is involved in trying to play the best hand that is put in front of you.
The ranking order of Poker hands is mentioned below with slight variations starting from the highest to the lowest. They are as follows:
Straight Flush: Consists of five cards in sequence, of the same suit. The most promising straight flush is known as a royal flush, which comprises of the ace, king, queen, jack and ten of a suit. A royal flush is an invincible hand. But there could be a tie where two players get a royal flush, in this situation the highest rank at the top of the suit wins.
Four of a Kind: This consists of four cards of the same rank, and one side card also known as the ‘kicker’. There can be a tie and in that situation the winner is determined with the person having highest fifth or kicker card.
Full House: This hand consists of three cards of the same rank, and two cards of a different, matching rank. In case of a tie where two players have a full house then the player having the highest matching cards wins else if the two players have the same three matching cards then the player with the higher value of the two matching cards wins.
Flush: This hand consists of five cards of the same suit. In case of a tie the player having the highest ranked cards win, if required to determine the winner one needs to see the second, third, fourth even the fifth highest card to determine the winner. If the cards are of similar rank then the pot is split but the suit itself is never used to determine the winner.
Straight: This consists of five cards in sequence. The Ace can act as the highest or lowest. It is the only card that can act in this manner. For instance A,K,Q,J,T is the highest (Ace high) straight; 5,4,3,2,A is the lowest (Five high) straight. If there is a tie then the highest card in the top of the sequence wins.
Three of a kind: This hand consists of three cards of the same rank and two unconnected side cards. If there is a tie then the highest in the three of a kind wins and if the winner can’t be decided with that then the highest of the side cards wins.
Two pair: This consists of two cards of a matching order, another two cards of a different matching rank, and one absolutely unrelated side card. When there is a tie, then the person with the highest pair wins, further on the person with the highest second pair wins and lastly then the winner is determined with the person with highest side card.
