Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata passes away

In very sad news Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President and CEO, has passed away at 55.

Iwata succumbed to complications regarding a bile duct tumor, on which he had surgery in 2014.

A very recognisable public figure within the industry, Iwata became Nintendo president in 2002, after the retirement of Hiroshi Yamauchi, who had previously been in the role since the 1940’s. Iwata would see Nintendo through an incredible period of financial success, including the development and launch of the Nintendo DS, and the global phenomenon of the Nintendo Wii, one of the highest selling consoles of all time. Recently he had acquired cult status due to his quirky hosting style on Nintendo Direct press videos.

Of his passing, Mario-creator and friend Shigeru Miyamoto stated: “I am surprised at this sudden news and overcome with sadness.” whilst flags at Nintendo HQ were lowered to half-mast in respect.

Satoru Iwata is survived by his wife Kayoko. Funeral services will take place July 17.
