Last night, in a former museum turned event space in Jacksonville, Florida, gamers, artists, cosplayers, musicians and breakdancers – yes, breakdancers – came together for the 2016 GAAM Show, a house party cum charity art auction. GAAM, which stands for Games Art And Music, is a culture and lifestyle organization focused on growing the gaming industry and experiences in the Southeast. And it also throws kick-ass parties twice a year, featuring music, booze, dancing, food trucks, cosplay and lots and lots of video games.
For those of you who missed the party, I thought I’d share a few highlights. This year’s theme was VS, as in Street Fighter VS Mortal Kombat, Tekken VS Killer Instinct, Girls VS Guys, Couples VS Squads, Gamers VS Cosplayers. For such an aggressively antagonistic theme, I never met a nicer bunch. And though the free beer hour could have had something to do with it, I suspect it had more to do with with them being genuinely cool people. Cool people in cool costumes.
Here’s a small sampling of the cosplay…
…artwork (which was being auctioned off for charity, though my friend and fellow photog JP and I were fuzzy on whether the proceeds were going to Child’s Play or First Coast No More Homeless Pets. I am pretty sure it was the pets, JP, unless children have grown furrier than I remember)….
…and aforementioned b-boys.
As I said, this is just a small sampling of the video game-inspired creativity on display; for more info on the artists, cosplayers and upcoming video game-themed events, check out GAAM. Personally, I’ve got my fingers crossed for a Witcher 3 themed event, which I think will help me better process my grief over Witcher 4 not being in the works.
Special thanks to JP for taking the photos and cutting the video while I crawled back into my rocky barren deep beneath the earth’s crust, as all lizard people do after sunset.
