Sonic Mania features a new spin on the classic Green Hill Zone

Most gamers that grew up during Sonic’s heyday will instantly tie the iconic blue speedster to the opening level of his very first appearance on the Sega Genesis, the Green Hill Zone. The appeal of this fan-favorite level is in no way lost on the minds over at Sega of America as they are finding brand new ways to expand upon the level in the upcoming retro 2D platformer Sonic Mania. In Sonic Mania, players will see Green Hill Zone Act 2 for the first time since Sonic’s debut.

Green Hill Zone Act 2 in Sonic Mania will introduce brand new mechanics, obstacles, and secrets to the lush tropical setting we have gotten so familiar with over the years. In this act, Sonic can ride ziplines and harness elemental shields, a la Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and use them to discover new hidden areas. For example, Sonic can take advantage of the fire shield to literally burn bridges and find hidden items; instead of the figurative bridges that Sonic Team have burned with fans by releasing games like Sonic ’06.

Along with this new reveal of Sonic Mania’s Green Hill Zone Act 2, Sega of America has also revealed that there is a brand new lineup of Eggman’s bosses called the Hard-Boiled Heavies. The first of these Heavies is called the Heavy Gunner, who is the boss of Studiopolis Act 1. Heavy Gunner is a police officer themed egg robot that can stop Sonic from speeding with liberal use of his rocket launcher.

Sega of America has posted gameplay footage of Sonic Mania and Green Hill Zone Act 1 and 2. In this footage you can see Sonic and Tails running in a crisp updated map with a consistent frame rate. The video shows off the remapped Green Hill Zone Act 2 area with the new obstacles in place as well as a reveal of some of the secrets in the level via the bridge burning mechanic.
