Scanner Sombre comes to Steam

Right, who fancies a spot of cave diving, then? Actually, let me re-phrase that. Who fancies a spot of cave escaping?

This is exactly what you’re going to find yourself doing in Introversion Software’s Scanner Sombre, which hit Steam on the 26th of April. You’ll also be able to find it over at GOG and the Humble store. This is a game about being stuck somewhere dark and decidedly not above ground and having to get to the surface.  If you’re already feeling a wee bit claustrophobic, we’ll add the fact that you’re starting somewhere that you probably don’t want to be and the more unsettling matter that you’re probably not alone.

Scanner Sombre uses the first person perspective and appears to be just oozing suspence. With the aid of LIDAR, your Light Detection and Ranging scanner, you must make your way through a complex network of caves. To aid in harnessing that creepy “I really don’t want to be here” feeling, you’re moving about utter darkness. Your scanner produces millions of individual light points to paint a static 3D image of your surroundings so there’s definitely a minimalist feel to this title. As I mentioned earlier, you may also have company on your journey into the dark, and that company may well not be particularly friendly.

Creative Director of Introversion Chris Delay said, “Scanner Sombre is a total departure for us as a studio in terms of visual style and tone; it’s almost a subversive game when you think about what people might expect from Introversion so we’re really looking forward to hearing people’s reactions when they can play it.”

Introversion’s Managing Director, Mark Morris, butted in with, “This is a very different experience from Prison Architect. It’s a shorter, but a more involved, claustrophobic game distilling a deep sense of unease into a single play session. It’s probably going to make you feel  a bit uncomfortable.”

Personally, I’ve never understood the fascination with being scared or creeped out by videogames but that’s admittedly also because I’m a massive wuss. I know that this is something that a huge bunch of you will be wanting to get your hands on sooner than later just so you can get your fix of the chills. If you like playing games to the elevated rhythm of your own heartbeat this could be one for you.
