Carmack: Doom 4 ‘shouldn’t take as long as Rage’

It feels like we’ve been hearing about Rage for a very long time now, so much so that it’s hard to believe the game will hit stores next year. Judging by the development cycle, you might also think it will be a good while before we see id Software’s next game – Doom 4 – once Rage is out.

That might not be the case though, as John Carmack revealed to Official PlayStation Magazine UK in a recent interview. The mag asked the legendary developer when we’d be seeing Doom hit the PS3, to which he replied: “Well we’ve got Doom 4 going on right now below our feet here.”

“..the Doom team are all sped up and working on this technology base – I’m not really at liberty to discuss much about it, but it’s going full steam ahead right now,” he added, along with this encouraging statement: “it shouldn’t take as long to ship as Rage. It’s already in the pipeline and we feel good about it.”

Surprisingly positive news, then. Doom 3 is six years old, and will likely be at least eight by the time Doom 4 gets here. The series has always been a landmark for graphics and tech, and we expect Doom 4 to be no different.
