All The Dragon Locations in Elden Ring
This post was last updated on November 1, 2023
Elden Ring has a lot of open-world bosses to deal with, and few are more ferocious than the 12 dragons scattered across the Lands Between. Most are easy to find, or more accurately, will find you. But there are a few that are hidden away.
The most difficult to find is probably Placedaedux in Crumbling Farum Azula, as you need to turn back time to face him. But there are others locked away in areas accessible only if you are completing certain questlines, such as Ranni’s or Fia’s.
If you want to go out and become the dragon slayer you have always wanted to be but don’t know where the damn things are, we’ve got you covered. In this article, we are going to tell you the dragon locations in Elden Ring as well as what killing them will get you.
1. Elder Dragon Greyoll
Elder Dragon Greyoll is both the easiest to find and the easiest to kill. It is in Dragon’s Barrow, near the Fort Faroth Site of grace. It’s completely prone and will not fight back.
Unfortunately, it is surrounded by several lesser dragons that attack when you get close. Fortunately, its left side is free of the smaller dragons so attack from there. It will take some time to kill, so having a weapon that can deal status effects like bleed will help.
Reward:
- 5 dragon hearts
- Elder Dragon Greyoll’s Roar, incantation unlocked in the Cathedral of Dragon Communion
- 50,000 runes
2. Flying Dragon Agheel
Flying Dragon Agheel is located in the swamp in Limgrave, just North East of the first step site of grace. You will see the dragon burnt ruins in the area that are partially submerged in the water. As you approach, Agheel will swoop down and start the fight.
If you are having a difficult time killing it, chat with Bloody Finger Hunter Yura, who is nearby, doing so will give you the opportunity to summon him to help out.
Rewards:
- 1 dragon heart
- Aghell’s flame, incantation unlocked in the Cathedral of Dragon
- 5,000 runes
3. Glintstone Dragon Smarag
If you are tackling the dragons as you go through the main questline, you will come across Glintstone Dragon Smarag. If you are following the quest to get into Raya Lucaria Academy, then you will come across it.
It is sleeping just North West of the Crystalline Woods grace. Unlike Agheel you can be the get the first hit in as it takes a little while for Smarag to wake up, allowing you to attack.
Rewards:
- 1 dragon heart
- Smarag’s Glintstone Breath, incantation unlocked in the Cathedral of Dragon
- 14,699 rune
- The academy gate key (technically you can just run in and get this without killing Smarag)
4. Magma Wyrm Makar
When you make your way to the Altus Plateau without using Grand Lift Dectus and go through the Ruin-Strewn Precipice, you will find Magma Wyrm Makar. To get to this area, you head north through Liurnia of The Lakes; stay at ground level until you find a miner’s cave, which is the start of the route.
Magma Wyrms are a little different from the more traditional dragons in the game. Makar will charge at you and have powerful AOE attacks. Thankfully, depending on some of your other quest progress, you should have some NPC summons available to you:
- Great Horned Tragoth is always available.
- Blackguard, if you purchased Boiled Prawns and didn’t kill him to get the necklace.
- Millicent, if you’ve advanced her quest until she leaves Sellia, but haven’t given her Valkyrie’s Prosthesis.
Rewards:
- 1 dragon Heart
- Magma Wyrm’s Scale Sword
- 24.000 runes
5. Decaying Ekzykes
In Caelid, you will find Decaying Ekzykes. Ekzykes is a scarlet rot dragon and will inflict the disease in a fight. It can be found in southern Caelid, near Caelid Highway South grace. From there, continue to the southeast on the main road, where you will find Ekzykes on the pathway.
Make use of torrent and ranged abilities in this fight, as the rot will shred your health bar if you are not careful.
Rewards:
- 1 Dragon heart
- Ekzykes’s Decay, incantation unlocked in the Cathedral of Dragon
- 38,000 runes
6. Flying Dragon Greyll
Flying Dragon Greyll is the second dragon found in Dragon’s Barrow. You will find it sitting on the giant stone bridge connecting the north (where the Bestial Sanctum is) and south (near Greyoll) of the region. Unlike some of the other open world dragons, this fight will feel a little enclosed as Greyll doesn’t like leaving the bridge, leaving you with a narrow area to use in the fight.
Rewards:
- 1 Dragon Heart
- Greyll Roar, incantation unlocked in the Cathedral of Dragon
- 80,000 runes
7. Borealis, the Freezing Fog
Borealis the Freezing Fog, is in the Mountain Top of the Giants, in the middle of the great frozen lake. Follow the road north until you reach the canyon, which is teeming with golems. In the canyon, head northeast until you reach a freezing lake and a blizzard.
As you head toward the center of the lake, Borealis, the Freezing Fog will attack. The blizzard can make keeping a distance difficult, so it’s best to stay close to the dragon despite the massive area the fight takes place in.
Rewards:
- 1 dragon heart
- Borealis’s Mist, unlocked in the Cathedral of Dragon
- 100,000 runes
8. Great Wyrm Theodorix
Great Wyrm Thoedorix is another named magma wyrm boss. It can be found in the frozen river north of the Albinauric Rise in the Mountaintops of the Giants. You will need to get both halves of the Haligtree Secret Medallion to use the Grand Lift of Rold to get to this area. The closest Site of Grace is the Cave of the Forlorn.
Rewards:
- 3 dragon hearts
- Theodorix’s Magma, incantation unlocked in the Cathedral of Dragon
- 180,000 runes
9. Glintstone Dragon Adula
Glintstone Dragon Adula is the first of the two dragons that will relocate once you get them down to 50% health. The first place you will encounter it is outside Ranni’s Rise in the Three Sisters in northwestern Liurnia of the Lakes.
When Adula moves, it will move to the Cathedral of Manus Celes. To reach the Cathedral you will need to complete Ranni’s quest line past the point of defeating Astel.
Rewards:
- 3 dragon hearts
- Adula’s Moonblade
- 120,000 runes
10. Ancient Dragon Lansseax
The second moving dragon, Ancient Dragon Lansseax, is first found on the path from Ruin-Strewn Precipice, near the Abandoned Coffin site of grace. Once its health is down to halfway, it will move further up on the Altus Plateau, next to the Sainted Hero’s Grave (up the hill in the east before the city entrance).
Rewards:
- Lansseax’s Glaive
- 60,000 Runes
11. Lichdragon Fortissax
Lichdragon Fortissax is a little more difficult to find than some of the other dragons, but as one of the legendary dragons, it’s understandable. It is in the Deeproot Depths, an underground area connected to Nokron, Eternal City. You need to fight the Twin Gargoyles to gain access to the area.
To get to this legendary dragon, you need to follow Fia’s quest line until you hand her the Cursemark of Death, then reload to get the prompt to enter her dream and start the fight. The closest site of grace is the Prince of Death’s Throne.
Rewards:
- Remembrance of the Lichdragon
- 90,000 Runes
12. Dragonlord Placidusax
The final named dragon on this list is the legendary Dragonlord Placidusax. You’ll find him in Crumbling Farum Azula. It is not the easiest place to find, but starting at the Beside the Great Bridge Site of Grace you need to head back down the elevator and out of the church.
If you are playing with visible messages, then you should see some at the point on the cliff you need to jump off to get to the starting area. If you can’t see the messages, the point to jump off is to the left of the tree; just remember to look before you leap.
Follow the path to the flat area. In the middle you should get the prompt to lie down in one of the slots which will transport you back in time and into the boss arena.
Rewards:
- Remembrance of the Dragonlord
- 280,000 Runes
What To Do With Dragon Hearts
As you go on your way, killing every dragon you see, you’ll find yourself slowly increasing your supply of dragon hearts. You can, of course, hoard them until the end, never spending them on anything. Or you can visit the Church of Dragon Communion to spend them on dragon communion incantations.
There are two dragon churches. The first place you’ll be directed to is in south west Limgrave. You need to travel through the seaside cave to get to it. You’ll only be able to unlock the basic dragon incantations here.
The second is the Cathedral of Dragons, in southern Caelid. This is where you will get the named incantations, so it is probably a better place to redeem your dragon hearts.
There are 14 dragon communion incantations to purchase, with each costing a varying amount of dragon hearts to unlock. For the best ones, you will need to kill the dragon that is associated with the ability. For example, in order to obtain Agheel’s flame, you must first kill him.
Dragon Incantations
- Agheel’s Flame – a strong fire breath attack
- Borealis’s Mist – a strong icy breath attack
- Dragon Claw – a dragons claw will swipe in front of you
- Dragon Fire – a basic fire breath attack
- Dragon Ice – an ice breath attack
- Dragon Maw – a dragon bites foes before the caster
- Ekzykes’s Decay – a more powerful rotten breath attack
- Glintstone Breath – a magic breath attack
- Greyoll’s Roar – a powerful dragon roar
- Magma Breath – a magma attack
- Rotten Breath – a rot breath attack
- Smarag’s Glintstone Breath – you’ll spew magic breath attack
- Theodorix’s Magma – a powerful magma attack
Other Dragon Heart Locations In Elden Ring
There are some other small dragons in the game that drop dragon hearts.
- Magma Wyrm found inside the Volcano Manor Dungeon. Drops 1 heart.
- Magma Wyrm found in the lava lake next to Seethe Water Terminus in Mt. Gelmir. Drops 1 heart.
- The Magma Wyrm found inside Gael Tunnel at Caelid. Drops 1 heart.
- The 3 smaller Glintstone Dragon west of Moonlight Altar. They drop x1 Dragon Heart each.
Final Thoughts
Overall, the majority of dragons in Elden Ring are pretty easy to find, as most of them are on the path to completing the main quest, and as for the others, besides Dragonlord Placidusax and Lichdragon Fortissax, they are easy to come across while just generally exploring the world.
