Far Cry 3 gameworld 10x that of its predecessors

The first thing to improve on all sandbox games is size. If your gaming world is the equivalent to the size of a large European country with varied terrain, then you might as well make room on your shelf for some kind of an award. The Far Cry series is one of those gaming franchises that just happens to be trying to hold the hugest world yet on its shoulders.

“If you look at the vistas and the scale of Far Cry 1 and 2, take that and multiply it by ten,” Jason VandenBerghe, narrative director for the game, has told Edge mag.

Despite this increase in size, the environment will also be more “dense.”

“We want to take that even further,” VandenBerghe says. “We’re focusing on taking that scale and making it dense, so that around every corner there’s something to find or see.”

Not only is the game looking to bulk itself up, Far Cry 3 is also going to have the obligatory addition of moral choices, but not simplified “good versus evil” choices, claims VandenBerghe. “I don’t think that’s interesting.”

“I want to present the player with intense situations, and then I don’t even want to watch what you do. That’s not the designer’s business.”

Far Cry 3 is out next year.
