Netflix adds game rentals to Qwikster

The long-running and popular films rental service Netflix is adding game rentals (console discs) to its recently-formed Qwikster division, which handles all physical media deliveries. As of the moment of writing, no pricing has been announced.

Outlined in a blog post, CEO Reed Hastings explained the name Netflix will be adherent to the streaming service only, while Qwikster will be the one sticking to the DVD by mail service known among its users. While within the same company, these services have been separated from one another, clearly delineated by the Netflix site and the creation of Qwikster.com. In addition to DVDs, videogames will become part of a Qwiskter “upgrade option” which is similar to the already existent Blu-ray upgrade.

“One improvement we will make at launch is to add a videogames upgrade option, similar to our upgrade option for Blu-ray, for those who want to rent Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360 games,” said Hastings. “Members have been asking for videogames for many years, and now that DVD by mail has its own team, we are finally getting it done.”
