The Rold Route Elden Ring: How to Get There
This post was last updated on September 1, 2023
To progress in Elden Ring after defeating Margot, you will need to take the Grand Lift of Rold up to the Mountaintop of Giants. However, this is not exactly clear, as Elden Ring definitely takes a hands off approach when it comes to quest guidance.
One such location is the Rold Route. Thankfully, it is not too hard to find once you know where to look, as the path starts from the entrance to the city where the Erdtree Avatar is. There are several steps you need to take to get there, as well as a few tough enemies waiting to jump out at you.
In this Elden Ring guide, we will tell you where you need to go and what you need to do in order to follow the Rold Route to get to the Rold Grand Lift and progress on your journey to be Elden Lord.
Unlocking the Rold Route In Elden Ring
Before you even think of searching for the Rold route in Elden Ring there is something you need to do to unlock access to it, and that is to defeat Morgott the Omen King. He is not an easy boss to find, as the royal capital has many different pathways and locations, making it very easy to get lost.
To find and defeat Morgott, you need to head upwards in the capital city. The first point you need to scale is the giant dragon’s wing in the center of the city (you will pass by the Avenue Balcony grace on the way, which is useful for later). From there, you’ll get access to the balcony over the giant door blocking access to the abandoned manor.
From there, you need to scale the roots of the Erd tree up to the boss room of the Golden Spectre of Godfrey, First Elden Lord. After defeating him, you still need to go further upward toward the Erd Tree, past the Queen’s Bedchamber site of grace and toward the Elden Throne Room.
Here you’ll find the mandatory boss, Morgott the Omen King, waiting to kill you.
Defeating Morgott the Omen King
Morgott’s mechanics are similar to Margit, the Fell Omen (not surprising as they are one in the same), as he uses heavily delayed attacks. In the first phase, he sticks to delayed melee attacks, which can be difficult to judge, so using Bloodhound’s Step can be very useful for melee builds.
In the second phase, he will be a little more active, using bleed attacks as well as more ranged attacks. But keeping your distance and not getting greedy will allow you to whittle down his health bar.
In this fight, you can also use Margit’s Shackle to stun him, and summon Melina to help fight with you from outside the golden fog door. Mimic tear is a useful spirit summons for this fight.
Getting to The Grand Lift Of Rold
Once Margot is defeated, you need to progress the main questline by trying to enter the Erd Tree and triggering a conversation with Melina, where she will give you the Grand Lift Rold’s medallion.
When you open your map with the Rold medallion in hand, a bright red map marker should appear roughly where the Rold route is, but it’s not clear where you’ll need to go. The quickest way is to go back to the Avenue balcony site of grace as it is the nearest site of grace to get to the Rold Route entrance.
- From the Avenue balcony site of grace you need to head up the stairs to the main street of the Royal Capital, where the Erdtree Avatar is patrolling and head left.
- Follow Leyndell’s main road to the left.
- Follow the path past several demihuman enemies until you reach a large closed door.
- Proceed through the doors, and go up the nearby stairs.
- At the top turn left through the archway.
- Walk onto the elevator and pull the lever.
- At the end of the elevator ride you will get the prompt for the Forbidden lands.
- Follow the path north to get to the Grand Lift of Rold (there is a grace located before the lift of rold)
- At the Grand lift of Rold follow the prompt to hoist Rold medallion.
- Cut scene is triggered as the lift takes your character to the Mountaintop of Giants.
What To Do On The Rold Route?
The forbidden lands along the Rold route are fairly straightforward, so it’s easy to overlook things on the way to the Grand Lift of Rold:
- There is a Black Blade Kindred on the route which will drop two great weapons, the Gargoyle’s Black Axe and Gargoyle’s Black Blades. It will initiate combat as you pass.
- There is a hidden Night’s Cavalry on the route which will only come out at night.
- It is also the only way to get to the divine tower that is used to fortify Morgott’s great rune and Mohg’s great rune.
- A golden seed can be collected halfway (look for the golden sapling.
Final Thoughts
Knowing where the Rold Route is an important thing in Elden Ring as the Grand Lift leads to powerful shard bearers and awe inspiring locations. It is also key to progressing in the main questline in the game to become the Elden Lord.
