Happy Anniversary to this ’80s classic.
Tetris is a game that needs very little introduction. Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last 35 years, you’ve probably seen, heard about, or played it.
Since its creation in 1984, Tetris has been downloaded more than 500 million times on mobile devices alone. It’s been sold hundreds of millions of times on more than 50 platforms across 200 countries in the world. It defined a generation.
The game is so popular because of its simplicity of play. You shift different shaped blocks to fill lines before you run out of space. It gets harder and faster the longer you play, seemingly never-ending. Run out of room as the blocks drop and it’s game over.
“It’s been 35 years since Tetris first debuted, and just like the game’s colorful Tetriminos and Line Clearing gameplay, what also remains the same is that people simply love Tetris,” said Maya Rogers, President and CEO of Blue Planet Software, the sole agent for the Tetris brand. “Today, Tetris is as popular as ever among fans worldwide, and we’re thrilled to share this monumental moment with them. Happy anniversary Tetris!”
There’s an incredible back story to the invention of Tetris, full of wonder, espionage, and slacking off at work. You can read more about it here. To celebrate Tetris turning 25, a new logo has been released, giving the classic logo a fresh, contemporary look that honors the original brand that’s recognized globally.
