Gears of War 3 formalized, out in a year

“The worst kept secret in the videogame industry,” as design director Cliff Bleszinski put it during his Late Night appearance last night, has been formally confirmed; Gears of War 3 is knee deep in development.

Pegged as “definitely the biggest and most dramatic chapter” in the series yet, the trilogy finale follows the Delta Squad on their final fights and is said to plunge players into “a harrowing tale of hope, survival, and brotherhood”. Something the in-engine Ashes to Ashes announcement trailer above — created by the same folks behind the Mad World, Rendezvous, and Last Day spots — attempts to reflect.

The game’s out worldwide in just under a year, on April 5, 2011 in North America and Asia, April 7 in Japan, and April 8 in Europe.
